Easy Crock Pot Turkey Breast

November 18, 2012 by Carrie

3 Ingredient Crock Pot Turkey Breast

Thanksgiving is almost here!  One thing I’m thankful for is this crock pot turkey breast recipe that my friend Kristin shared with me a couple of years ago.  This is literally the easiest way to cook a turkey breast but it tastes like you spent all day on it!

I’m not Julia Child.  My kind of cooking consists of throwing a few ingredients into the crock pot, turning it on, and then enjoying the food that night for dinner.  Over the years my crock pot has become my best friend in the kitchen.  So naturally, this recipe fits in nicely with my kind of cooking!

Crock Pot Turkey Breast so simple and the results are wonderful–moist, flavorful turkey with a delicious sauce that pairs well with mashed potatoes.

By the way, this is the crock pot I use and I absolutely love it!  It cooks meals automatically with a built-in meat thermometer, it’s big enough for roasts, and has a spill-proof lid that clamps shut.  It makes cooking so simple and it’s worth every penny!

Easy Crock Pot Turkey Breast

{A printable version of this recipe is available at the end of the post}

Ingredients:

1 turkey breast (bone in) about 6 pounds (or bigger if you have a big crock pot)
1 packet dry onion soup mix
3 TBSP butter
(no water is needed—you’ll be amazed at how much juice comes out as the turkey cooks)

Directions:

Coat the inside of crock pot with non-stick spray

Place turkey in crock pot breast up.  Since the meaty part of the turkey is so heavy it will sort of tip over to one side.  That’s okay!  It will probably end up looking like this:

Coat turkey breast all over with dry onion soup mix.

Cut butter into 3 sections and place on top of turkey.

Cook on low for about 6-7 hours (or when internal temperature reaches 175 degrees) and then enjoy!

Don’t forget the mashed potatoes!  My 15 Minute Prep Mashed Potatoes are the perfect companion to this turkey breast and they only take 15 minutes to prep!

Who has time to make homemade mashed potatoes--you do! A couple smart time-saving tricks will get dinner on the table in a flash!

Would it be possible to cook on high? I am hoping that I can mak it 3 hours

I’ve never tried it on high, so I can’t say for sure. Is the turkey frozen? If it is, I wouldn’t try it on high. I’d just wait until another day when you have more time to cook it all day. I hope that helps!

If the turkey is only 3 lbs how long should I cook for?

My guess would be about 4 hours on low but use a meat thermometer to make sure it’s cooked fully before eating. Since the turkey is smaller you may only need half of the dry onion soup packet. I hope that helps Nadia!

Have you ever cooked it with a frozen turkey breast? Or do you always thaw it first?

    • Carrie says

I’ve always defrosted the turkey breast in the fridge a couple days in advance before cooking it. I’ve gotten this question a lot so I need to try this with a turkey breast right out of the freezer next time. If you do happen to try it, let me know how it works out. Otherwise if you really want to ensure good results, I’d recommend thawing the turkey breast first.

Does the turkey have any color once done or is it very pale?

    • Carrie says

I cook the breast with the skin on it and the skin does have a dark tan color but the meat underneath will look more pale, like cooked chicken. If you’re wondering if the turkey is fully cooked I would recommend using a meat thermometer to ensure it’s cooked thoroughly, just to be on the safe side. I hope that helps!

What about 10lb turkey breast? Should I use more than one packet?

    • Carrie says

In my own opinion, I would use one and a half packets of the onion soup mix with a 10 lb turkey breast. Then after it’s fully cooked, taste the juices and if you’d like the flavor to be stronger, you can add more in. If you use too much seasoning at the beginning, it’s hard to remove it. I hope that helps Lynn!

I can’t wait until turkey season rolls around, so I can put a couple of breasts in my freezer!
I had to laugh, all the way through this post, I kept reading “breast side up”. Hmmmmm….
Did you mean to say “skin side up”? LOL
I’ve never tried it with onion soup mix on it. That’s just beef bouillion and onions. Sounds yummy!!!

The onion soup mix really adds a great flavor–I hope you get to try it sometime. Yes maybe I should say “meaty” side up 😉

If you use a turkey bigger then 6pounds do you need more onion mix?

        • Carrie says

          October 27, 2016 at 8:16 pm

If the turkey is 7 or 8 pounds I think one onion soup mix would be enough. Onion soup mix is very flavorful and goes a long way, so you should be safe 🙂 I hope that helps, Jennifer!
